Harmony & Unity
Harmony
-
Involves selection of elements that share a common trait
-
Without variety, harmony becomes monotony
-
Variety is about a change or slight difference in elements and
objects in composition so it doesn’t feel boring
-
Harmony is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit
together

|
Figure 1.1 Applying the harmony in beige warm tone color

|
|
Figure 1.2 Harmony in different elements with the same color
palette and theme
|
Unity
-
Repetition of particular elements
-
Unity occurs when these elements are composed in such a way that they
are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme
|

Unity showed in the poster when they used the same recurring
theme, grouping of information in a uniform way and icons are
darker
Scale & Proportion
-
Scale and proportion are both design elements that have to do
with size
-
Scale
-
is the size of one object in relation to the other objects
in a design or artwork
-
Proportion refers to the size of the parts of an object in
relationship to other parts of the same object
-
Refers to the size and dimension of figures and forms relative
to a specific unit of measure
-
Determined in two ways
-
Actual measurement
-
Visual estimates based on comparison
-
Substantial deviation from a normal scale relationship can
create dramatic results and visual interest within the
design or composition
|

|
|
Figure 1.8 Scaling in artwork
|
- Proportion
-
Proportion in art and design is the relationship of two
or more elements in a composition and how they compare to
one another with respect to size, color, quantity, degree,
setting, ie ratio
-
Proportion is sad to be harmonious when correct relationship
exists between the elements with respect to size or quantity
-
The effective use of proportion in design often result in
harmony and unity

LECTURE 4
Symbol, Word & Image
Symbols
-
Were used since the beginning of
civilization
-
Commercially, they’re used to indicate a brand in a
form of logo or icon
-
Timeless concept and values
-
Used to remind us of etiquette and rules
-
A sign, shape or object that is use to represent
something else
-
In design, symbols can provide or convey information,
equivalent to one or more sentences of text, or even a
whole story
-
Figurative Representation
- Visuals
-
Graphic Symbols
-
Pictorial symbols
-
Image related and simplified pictures
-
Helps in educational materials – enabling
learners to see visually
|

|
|
Figure 1.12 Symbol indicating academic
|
-
Abstract symbols
-
Most likely they look like objects but with less
details
-
Brands also use abstract symbols for their
logos
|
Figure 1.13 Simple abstract symbols we see
everyday
|

|

and triumph for sport
|
-
Arbitrary Symbols
-
Have no resemblance to the object or
ideas
-
Invented with the meaning constructed. Many
are based on geometric shapes and colors
-
We have to learn the symbols
|

|
|

|
Words & Image
-
Important to use suitable and relevant images when
designing
-
Choosing the right words to pair with imagery is
important to deepen the meaning of the design
-
Composition will result in visual hierarchy and
balance
-
Typography is the design and arrangement of
text

TASK
We were assigned to create 1 design each after
choosing 2 of the principles (harmony, unity, symbol,
or word and image). For this exercise I'll be choosing
symbol and words and image. My works will be created
using Procreate app from iPad.

I choose to do designs of a pancake pictorial
symbol. I added fruits to it so it won't be boring but
I also remember to keep it as simple as I can as it is
still a symbol. First off, I started by drawing simple
line arts of the sketch, I did not think much while
working on this since it is pretty straightforward.
For the particular colors I chose is more towards
pastel so the symbol would stand out against the white
background.
The reason I chose pancake is none other than the love
I have for pancakes, be it American pancakes as the
one I decided to create a symbol out of, or Japanese
fluffy pancakes or even Dutch very thin pannenkoeken.

Pinterest and found a couple interesting artworks.

From these works I am inspired to do a tribute
art for the Netherlands, the place I lived for the
past two years. I loved taking pictures while staying
there so I choose the picture I have taken of the park
near where I lived. The picture I have taken below is
in a city called Groningen in northern Netherlands. I
was there for 2 years for my studies before I decided
to get back home to Indonesia. I especially liked the
picture I took in the park because other than it is
really really near with the place I've called home for
the past 2 years, I captured it when the sky was in a
very "Netherlands" condition, meaning it's not too
sunny yet not too dark (NL has barely any sunlight
during fall and winter, it would always rain). The
place is also very sentimental to me since I used to
go down the road so many times whether or not I'm
walking or biking there. The picture here looks very
somber and it fits the right mood I want to set for
the artwork.
|
Figure 2.7 The picture I have taken in 2020
|
I tried to do a couple of things with the picture to
also incorporate some words into the image. I chose a
couple lyrics and ended up with Tyler the Creator's
'See you again' lyrics since it resonates with how I
want to bring up the artwork as a tribute and last
goodbye to the place I have lived and loved for the
past two years. It fits the somber and bitter
yet grateful mood I wanted to set for the work.
|
Figure 2.8 The first sketch of the work
(18/09/2021)
|
I added more elements to it so the artwork won't
be too flat and the graphical elements I added sort of
represents hope and a little sprinkle of happiness to
otherwise a very sad image.
|

|
On the composition, I purposefully extend the
picture with my own drawing as it represents my own
interpretation of the place I am so familiar with. For
myself, the continuation for me is how I want to say
how there is so much more in it than the picture I've
taken and how I see the picture in my own eyes. The
writings are intentionally written without
professional typography but rather my own hand writing
since I want the artwork to be close and dear to me,
so it'd look more like memento. I've also changed the
color of the writing to be black since it looks nicer
than the red I've previously tried on. I put the
writing of "groningen, 2020" on purpose inside the
photo because the reason I create this artwork after
all is to blend what I took in the photo with what I
remember the place as, I want them to unify.
With that explanation, here is my final submission for
Word and Image.

FEEDBACK
-
For words and image : very good choice of words, has
continuation principle within it
-
For symbol : good colors
-
For blog : should add more explanation of the
exploration and work
REFLECTION
I have to say that on my third exercise, I'm getting used a bit more to grind up more ideas in my head. The process of making artwork is much more fluid now back than back in the first exercise. The principles that are taught, I try to follow and incorporate more easily without much of a sole focus but rather an add-on that contains the principle. Symbolism is an art I've always liked since long before I joined art school, it's simple and contains lots of meaning. I've also learnt how powerful the connection between words and image is and how it could represent a lot of things that sometimes just an art cannot show explicitly enough. They correlates more than I think. I am also holding the words and image artwork really closely since it really means a lot to me.
