TASK

For our next project, we are assigned to create a kinetic typography music video. That is why Mr Martin is teaching us on how to create kinetic typography. He showed two ways on how we can play around with After Effects and create good motion graphics to showcase lyrics video.

Attached below is one of the example of kinetic typography applied in a lyric video.

During tutorial class, Mr Martin showed us the ropes on how to do it. He showed us two ways so there are two results for both exercises. Both were taken from the same verse of the song.

Unfortunately since I did both on campus, I do not have the necessary screenshots that I can share. However, I can share the results I did.

I also followed Mr Martin's slides tutorial attached below, while following his lecture in the offline class.

Here are the results I've obtained from following the two versions.

Attached above is the first result, the way I did it was by creating the final composition on how the end result would look like, and move the timing of the words. I also used null object and parenting the text layers to swing it to the other side.

Afterwards, Mr Martin showed us another way where we can try adding the text layers one by one in which we learn how to use animating tool. This animating tool is powerful as we can do several animations with just one keyframe; the amount of animation available is also endless. Below is the second result.

For our project, we assigned ourselves with Pink's song called So What (as recommended by Mr Martin). We divided our work and assigned ourselves with individual lines. Initially there was only 6 of us but Mr Martin asked if another person can join our group. So we did accept the person and she did a couple of lines in the beginning of the song, since she joined in a bit late and we didn't have much time to rearrange the assigned lines again.

Here are the initial arrangements, I played around with AE a little bit. Afterwards I assigned 4 specific fonts and a color palette arranged by my groupmate Luisa for my groupmmates to work with while creating the whole video.

Here is one of the clips from my own work.

Attached below is the final result as a group. They submitted their video results on google drive and I arranged them in Premiere Pro.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 2 :

  • As a group, we need to finish first before Sir Martin can drop comments on the work.

REFLECTION

To be really honest, the small timeframe (and loads of other works and assignments) makes this exercise a bit challenging. I am not satisfied with my work, and felt like I could've looked up more tutorials online to create a more interesting work. I did not understand how to do transitions so most of the time it would just be a color change in the background. I feel like there is a learning curve to After Effects, and even though I have tried several times working on AE, I am still not too comfortable with it, and still need most help from other people. I also encountered a problem in which the clip wont sync with the song only in Premiere Pro (it syncs well with the song while working in AE), so that got me a bit frustrated.

Working in groups can also be challenging, as I need to remind my groupmates about when to submit the work. Thankfully they did everything well at the end. Even though for the most part of me just want to stay up and re-do everything, I did not have enough time to do so. I promise myself that I will try to do better in the next project and give it my all.
