INSTRUCTIONS

LECTURES

On Notion.

TASKS

In the first couple of weeks, we were assigned little exercises every week. These exercises would be interconnected with the class App Design. These were done in Miro

WEEK 1 TASK: Choose an app to redesign

App Chosen : M-Tix XXI

This app is an app developed by an Indonesian Cinema Company (Cinema XXI) that allows members (m.tix) to purchase movie tickets online. In the same app, users are also allowed to view which movies are now showing and are upcoming, purchase F&B for the specific showtime. They can also check which movies are showing based on their location (or chosen) and filtering through the theatres. On some specific movies, they also allow presale tickets too. In the same app, users are also able to know more about the movie and have a look at the trailer.

WEEK 2 TASK :  Define Target Audience and Demographic

To follow up, we were then asked to define our target audience and demographics.

WEEK 3 TASK : Project Definition

In week 3, we needed to do define the project we're doing with 7W1H questions.

We also had to define the User Empathy Map following up from the previous Target Audience.

WEEK 4 TASK : Design Audit & User Persona

In Week 4, we were asked to do a design audit - this was to analyze the app overall and define the possible pain points. Complete design audit can be seen in miro or here.

Afterwards, we were asked to define further the User Persona. These were imaginary people that we 'developed' by learning from the target audience of the app.

WEEK 5 TASK : User Journey Map

Reaching the final week before the making of proposal + presentation. Last assignment we did was User Journey Map on basically how the user would walkthrough when using the app.

Week 6 : PROPOSAL

Week 7 : INTERVIEW/SURVEY

We were given a choice to do interviews/survey to learn more about the painpoints of the app. I had previously done this in the class App Design so I used the same information for this.

Week 9 - 14 : Group Project

For our final project, we are assigned to a group to start working on our chosen app's redesign and then create a prototype for it. Firstly, I got assigned to be grouped with Michelle and Hansel. We came to a conclusion that we'll choose my app (XXI Cinema App) to redesign because it has the most potential. After deciding this, Jess was added to the group, she also agreed with the chosen app.

Based on the previous user journey map, I personally have concluded that the app has problems particularly in how ineffective the pages were and how the app utilize the location settings. On the location settings, the app ineffectively shows the location with choices of theatres around the location displayed, however the the page looks very information heavy, therefore people often get confused using it. Lastly, the initial XXI Cinema App has nothing that forces cinema watchers, especially movie geeks and those who usually watch a lot, to use the app. Tickets from the app has to be printed (defeats the purpose of the app itself) and there's no loyalty program within the app.

With all these in mind, we were set to create 3 features to combat these problems.

1. Geolocation for theatres, displaying how far away it is without overwhelming the users with too much text (such as complete address)

2. Getting rid of the queues by using QR Code for Online ticket (can be accessed via app)

3. Loyalty program with points to redeem for prizes.

To start this, we first gathered inspirations from behance and other apps.

Afterwards, we were briefed about onboarding and we created the onboarding pages on our figma board. This onboarding is kept simple and seamless to create less painpoints for these users. We also create extra screens for the booking itself but the booking pages are nothing too final. Note that these prototype screens are before user testing.

For user testing, Michelle, Hansel, and me, each will choose a person to user test with, with hopefully close enough to the previous user personas I have created. I chose my friend from Jakarta (currently residing in Netherlands) to do the user test. Questions were prepared by me, Michelle and Jess.

After user testing and presentation, we were done. We compiled everything into notion.

REFLECTION

This module is a bit confusing. The concept is quite abstract and the results are not that tangible. However, by the end of the module I had learnt a lot and without realizing, I also applied what I had learnt in this class to the other module (app design and dissertation since I was also doing UX study for that module). This class was not particularly hard but at times I would get confused.

My only complain was to whoever set Malaysia's Public Holiday. A lot of of weeks passed with no classes due to Sir's leave and so so so many holidays happened during monday, forced us to meet in online replacement classes.

All in all, all the learnings I've gotten from this module would be useful for the future for sure.
