Adjustment Layer

  • Non-destructive image editing tools
  • You can edit and discard your adjustments or restore your original image at any time
  • Basic
    • The properties panel can allow us to modify the the layer, which will modify the image

    • Level
Figure 1.2 Before and After using adjusting Levels
      • Modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, midtones, and highlights
      • This is the most used tool in Photoshop for photo editing
    • Curves
      • Lets you adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image

    • Exposure
      • Exposure lets you adjust exposure levels with three sliders: Exposure, Offset and Gamma
      • Exposure will adjust only the highlights of the image
      • Offset Adjusts the midtones
      • Gamma adjust the dark tones only

    • Selective color
      • Selective Color adjustment layer selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors in your image
    • Filter
      • Use filters to edit photos is an essential element of Adobe's graphics editor
      • There are filters to change color, add blur or create completely new image effects. Photoshop offers a virtually unlimited variety of filters for this purpose.

TASK

We were asked to edit our chosen composition from the previous task to enhance the picture. Since my composition#3 was suggested by Sir Fauzi, I chose said composition and edit it to look more pleasing in our eyes.

Figure 1.5 Composition#3 before editing (07/09/2021)

From this composition, I felt that the background, the tree and the old school tv are dull in comparison to the typewriter, therefore I played around with curves, color balance and adding selective color on those elements. Since the tone of the typewriter leans towards a colder tone, I purposefully added a warm (orange) photo filter using a clipping mask (which would only apply to the layer in the element we clipped on). By doing this, I also made the plants look a bit darker.

Since the tv is very dull in contrast with the typewriter, I purposefully played with the vibrancy adjustment layer.

I also lowered the exposure on the typewriter layer and added another filter of a warmer tone so it won’t stand too “cold” and be too different than the other elements. With this, I achieved what I deem as final to my editing.

FEEDBACK

REFLECTION

I learnt that Photoshop is a very powerful photo editing app with so many different tools we can use. We can also manipulate image to make it look extremely different. This time, I take a chance to edit my digital collage composition so it would look more balance and make the elements blend well together.
