Sense of Place

The importance of observation

    • Attentive to your surroundings
    • Pay attention do details
  • Biomimicry
    • Looking at the nature and mimic them to create a design
Figure 1.1 Biomimicry examples
  • It is important to be mindful to your surroundings
  • Try something new
    • like by choosing an activity that heighten your senses
  • Connect with nature and ignore distractions/disturbance
  • Challenge yourself to a mental workout
  • It is important to record what you observe
  • Stay inquisitive
    • keep asking and keep wondering things
Sense of Place
  • Getting a sense of place with only visual aids
  • How do you express your sense of that place
  • Documenting the observations - photographs, diary, talking to relevant people, etc.

INSTRUCTION

TASK

We are assigned to create an artwork based on sense of place. I did more research on this since I have some doubts with what I want to create, and I'm not quite sure if what I want to portray can give out the same feeling. I did research online and on Pinterest on what people do create a sense of place artwork.

I try to look around for more ideas. I also contacted Dr. Charles to elaborate more on what we are asked to do. Before that I try to recreate this photograph I took back in the Netherlands.

I tried making the sketch, first doing the outline.

Figure 2.5 Progress (19/10/2021)

I showed the sketch to Sir Charles and he questioned on what I was going for in this. I tried to explain my way of thinking. This picture I took is from a library when I first go to the university back in the Netherlands.

I had only been 18 for 2 months and it was my first time going so far away from home. I visited the library there on my second day there and I felt so much when I first stepped in. At first I thought it was really really cool. Then afterwards I felt intimidated. I saw the lines of the stairs and how huge the building was and all I could think of is "this is probably where my journey starts".

After explaining this to Sir Charles, I pretty much get the idea of how I want to present this artwork. The idea is to create a character that's me in the middle and animate how the building slowly gets bigger.

So I created the sketch for the person and colored it.

I then moved the project into photoshop and tried to animate it.

I also tried giving off a fade out black effect by using black filter and played with the opacity.

Final Outcome

Here is the Final Result for Project 2 Sense of Place

I really want the viewers to see the artwork and felt what I felt the first time I stepped into that building; scared and intimidated, yet excited. I want the excitement to be shown in how I dress, with bright sweater and bright backpack.

FEEDBACK

  • Need to tell the story behind the place I tried to portray; how I actually felt and what emotion I want to evoke to the viewer, and try to make it clearer.

REFLECTION

Easy to say in the beginning I was confused, I wasn't really sure on what kind of artwork should I create and how I want to present it. I had to think quite hard on this one and I think after consultation with Sir Charles and a lot of thinking on my part, I feel like I did portray what I want to give out pretty well in the first place. It is always nice to reminisce and 'immortalize' the moments of life that are quite special to me.
