INSTRUCTIONS
DATA COLLECTION
During our discussion with the group, we decided with a series of
different resources to collect the data for our research. Here are the
few resources,
1. Internet Research
2. Docuseries from Netflix
3. Youtube Videos
4. Online Interviews (with Harelia & MicWrecka)
5. Online Survey
On the online interview, we got resources to interview a handful of
rappers in and out of Malaysia. Mister Asrizal introduced us to
Micwrecka, a Malaysian rapper and Evaleez (our group leader) also has
connection to Harelia, an Australian upcoming rapper. The interview was
conducted both by using Zoom/Google Meet.
For the interview preperation, we made a list of questions attached
below. The transcript of the replies from each rappers are also attached
alongside in the documents below.

After our interview, we also conducted research online. I was particularly
interested with how rap culture started and how it connects to the drugs and
violence that are both very prevalent to be mentioned in the rap music
nowadays, so I was assigned to research on that particular topic. I myself researched online about it and delved deeper, particularly reading on articles about it. One article that really analized this rooted problem really well also mentioned that this is really prevalent in the industry, that drug abuse and violence is not really a new thing anymore.
We also watched a Netflix Docuseries called Hip Hop Evolution and YouTube interviews regarding the
rap culture. They explained the history of rap and what their original
purpose is.
For the survey, we had a bunch of respondents and ask them where they stand
within the rap culture i.e if they know what the purpose of rap is, if they
feel like the purpose itself has shifted, also if there's a difference
between American rap and the rap in their own country.
For the complete review, here is a deck that summarizes all the data
collection.
FEEDBACK
WEEK 5 : Data collection is very thorough
REFLECTION
I learnt a lot during this data collection period and understand so much more about rap culture, that all these time I have only been scratching the surface. I learnt that even though it is art, people express themselves through it and they also bring along the experiences they've been through, all the good and bad including how drugs and violence are both so prevalent in especially black community in America. It also made me realize we all as artists are really similar to each other, with one similar goal that is to free ourselves and create something impactful, meaningful to us and hopefully the public. All these research made me more excited to start working on the final project, as I too want to express myself throught the art I make.
