Task 3 - Final Project

INSTRUCTIONS

FINAL PROJECT

For our final output we have decided on a couple of things, however Mr Asrizal suggested we changed up a few things. For our final decision, we chose to do two seperate project with its own sub project.

The first one is to create a digital artwork that speak about the problems that are present within the community i.e racial discrimination, misogyny, etc.

Evaleez decided to do an artwork that represent the racial discrimination present in the community, while I did an artwork that reflects on misogyny.

The second project is to actively help the artist (rapper) visualize their self reflection in the form of art. We asked Jarrod a.k.a Harelia if he would like us to create a cover for his future single, including the merchandise if it were to be printed.

My process on working the artwork that reflects misogyny started by me researching more about misogyny until I stumbled upon this really nice article from Berkeley Political Review. The article made me realize that there is prominent gender gap in the industry; that women lacks representation in the industry, both in the top 100 chart and in award shows, that it was only until 2019 that a woman (Cardi B) would win the Best Rap Album category in the Grammy’s award.

With all of that, I try to visualize something that would empower women to the general public. The idea I came up with is I want to give out an impactful message accompanied by figures of women in hip hop who tower over the industry at the moment.

Before anything, I was thinking of doing either digital or traditional art using watercolor, however I was afraid I could not convey the message well; that it would not come out as something bold and brave from my end. In the end, I chose to do the poster design in Photoshop instead, using the handful tutorials I have gotten from the past semester and YouTube. I started looking for examples of posters online.

I ended up liking the concept of the second reference as I feel like the glitch effect aesthetically looks pleasing and matches well with the energy I want to give.

Firstly, I started by looking for editorial HD pictures online and seperate the subject from the background. To select the subject, I use the quick selection tool and clean them up using the brush tool in the select and mask option. Aftewards I rearrange the layers to fit the composition. I also had to do minor adjustment with each layer to match the color and lighting of each subject.

I then looked up tutorial online to do the glitch effect with a little bit of adjustment (not turning the layer to black and white and use a fainter scan line).

I looked up online about quotes that felt right to be written in the background, something about women empowerment. I then came across Janelle Monae's (also an african american woman rapper) speech during Women's March in 2017 where she mentioned "Women will be hidden no more. We will not remain hidden figures.” I felt like it resonates well with what I want to convey so I decided with the "Women will no longer be hidden" as the line I want to use in the poster.

To create a better visualization that ties well with the glitch effect, I decided on doing neon writings. I was pretty annoyed at times because I had to use the outer glow fx to do this effect but my laptop started lagging pretty badly.

It was pretty frustrating but I pushed through and finally found the right settings to create the right amount of glow. I added more elements a background so it won't feel too empty before finalizing the draft

I sent out the image to my group members where they gave me feedback and felt the need for me to experiment more on the font.

I came up with two different outcomes for the final products which I am submitting both. I changed the color a little bit and made some minor adjustments.

All in all I hope with this outlet I could convey the message I really wanted to give out to the general public, I want women to believe in themselves and that they do matter and that they're free to chase after their own dreams, passions and after what they love.

My group works simultaneously on the projects which the full length explanation is attached below in our slides.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 6 : Instead of album cover, can the team use the genre as a whole
Example : A set of digital outwork that speak about discrimation/ spread positivity/ creativity
Produce a series of artwork that reflect them^ (expressive artworks)

REFLECTION

As I have mentioned in my previous blog entry, I was pretty excited working on this. I have always been the type of person who pursues gender equality and this resonates with how loud speaking I am about these topics. In the beginning I was not that confident with my drawing and illustration skills since it has been a while since I drew an illustration, therefore I went with the graphic design path, which turns out alright in the end because I am quite satisfied with my work. Albeit the frustration and digging my teeth through my lips because of the lag my laptop was going to through just for a small fx in photoshop, I managed to create something quite impactful and hopefully the message given would echo to the viewers who would see the poster as well.
